James Eliot has "just graduated, and this was to be his first experience in the profession of medicine. ... very good-looking, with clearly-cut features, and dark eyes, in which shone, like black diamonds, sparks of mischief."His family is well-to-do, the father "a successful peach-grower on a wholesale scale." Instead of taking the train, he decided to walk the twenty-odd miles to his new employer, "Doc" Gordon. It is evening and getting dark, when James sees a girl "conventionally dressed in a tailor suit of brown. .. She walked fast, with evidently as much enjoyment of the motion as James himself. They both walked like winged things." The girl, however, is being watched, then followed, finally accosted by a handsome stranger who flees when James approaches. James also meets Doctor Gordon who is driving home in a mud splattered buggy. And, finally, in the mysterious and beautiful house of the Doc's, his "widowed sister, Mrs. Ewing, [who] keeps house for me." Doc Gordon lives with her and her daughter, the girl from the woods. Evidently, something is going on that has everybody on high alert - blinds are drawn, the girl is forbidden to venture outside, a guard dog appears. Yes, there is love and there are complications and misunderstandings and happy endings. It is all suddenly resolved in a manner I did not anticipate.

This was the first of Freeman's novels I read -- which led to a succession of 15 to follow because I became hooked on her writing style. That is the best recommendation I can give. Reading this became the beginning of a wondrous journey.
