Short Trips v 1 Doctor Who Short Trips Various 9781844355471 Books

This Audiobook collects eight Doctor Who short stories read by actors associated with the given Doctor: William Russell ( Ian Chesterton), David Troughton (son of Second Doctor Patrick Troughton), Katy Manning (Jo Grant), Louise Jameson (Leela), Peter Davison (Fifth Doctor), Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor), Sophia Allred (Ace), India Fisher (Charley Pollard)

Rise and Fall: Overall, a very interesting beginning to the Short Trips line that has the First Doctor and Ian on a planet where time passes differently. It's a very clever concept. The only thing that lessened my enjoyment was that there was little done by Doctor or Companion (little that could be done for that matter.) Still, it's a well-written and intriguing piece. 7/10

Stain of Red in the Sand: A very atmospheric story that does a good job establishing the setting and eventually establishes that the Second Doctor is about, but the story is very vague. It's as if we're getting a Doctor Who story from the perspective of people who are tangentially involved but don't quite know what's going on themselves.Given that the Second Doctor and Companion don't speak, having David Troughton read it was practically superflous. 6/10

A True Gentleman: An unusual Doctor Who slice of life tale. It's very well-written. It really seems very plausible for the Third Doctor to rent a country place and exactly as he does in this story. Katy Manning brings the Doctor, the boy, and so many other characters to life in a reading that makes you forget it's just her. It's a lovely portrait of the Doctor's one-time meeting with a child and how he was a true gentleman. 7/10

The Death Dealer: This story is very quick and deals with the Doctor trying to explain a marketplace to Leela and then the central concept of the story. The story is thought provoking but a little too compact for what it's trying to do. Also, it did seem like Jameson wasn't able to create as clear a differentiation for her Fourth Doctor voice as she did in her Companion Chronicles performance. 6/10

The Deep: Nyssa tries to fix the Chameleon circuit and the Earth is quickly at risk of being overrun by superintelligent time travelling whales. It's an outrageous concept but it's perfect for the Short Trip format. It couldn't really hold up as the basis for a 2 hour story but it fits well as a great mini-adventure for the Fifth Doctor, with a lot of fun moments. It's really help by Big Finish's sound production which brings the scenes at sea to life with tremendous zest. 8/10

The Wings of a Butterfly: This was probably the one Short trip I've been looking forward to hearing. A Doctor Who story written by the actor who plays the Doctor. Overall, this is a light and really fun piece that deals with the issue of causation as the Doctor discovers that a man's trousers falling caused a planet to fall as well. Some nice twists in a very comedic Doctor Who tale, marvelously performed and delightfully written by Colin Baker. 7/10

Police and Shreeves: The Shreeves, an alien race that lives among us and could really be monstrous, but would rather just be left alone are interesting as a concept, but wouldn't usually make a focal point for a story. Still, it once again plays out very well as a Short Trip as we're introduced to the Shreeve and the main plot which seems rather pedestrian until we get a final twist at the end which is quite ironic given the Seventh Doctor's reputation as the master manipulator. 7/10

A disappointing concluding story to the first volume of Short Trips. There was too much backstory and too many plot threads for such a short work and it all ends on a real down note while not being really being evocative of the Eighth Doctor or Doctor Who in general. The basic plot for the back story was decent and might have worked together as a fully developed hour or two hour drama. 5/10
